Why Sora's off this list
OpenAI cut free-tier Sora access in January 2026, then discontinued the consumer app and website entirely in April 2026, with the API scheduled to sunset later in the year. If a guide is still telling you how to get Sora for free, it's out of date — there's no consumer Sora left to use.
The real free tier of video generation
Three tools currently have genuinely usable free tiers, each with a different catch:
- Runway gives 125 credits, but they're a one-time, lifetime allowance — about 25 seconds of Gen-4 Turbo video, watermarked. Good for a single test, not ongoing use.
- Luma Dream Machine gives 30 free generations every month in its cinematic style — but free-tier output is personal use only, no commercial rights.
- Pika gives renewing free credits for short, social-style clips with clean, no-watermark output — the best fit if you want to actually post what you make without a logo stamped on it.
Pick based on what you need: Pika for recurring, shareable content; Luma for style, if commercial use isn't a blocker; Runway for a one-off high-quality test.
Pairing voice and avatars
Video generation alone doesn't cover voiceover or talking-head avatars — for that:
- ElevenLabs free plan gives 10,000 characters a month (about 10 minutes of speech) and up to 3 instant voice clones. No commercial rights on the free tier and output requires attribution; the $5/month Starter plan removes both restrictions.
- HeyGen free plan gives 3 avatar videos a month (up to 1 minute each) from about 6 stock avatars, exported at 720p with a watermark.
Where paid becomes worth it
Once you need commercial usage rights, watermark-free 1080p/4K export, or more than a handful of generations a month, every one of these tools pushes you to a paid tier — but for testing a concept, prototyping a script, or making a single social clip, the free tiers above are real and current as of mid-2026.
